DR. ABI AL – HUSSAINI

Dr Al-Hussaini is an esteemed consultant interventional and general cardiologist with a dual accreditation in general medicine. She specialises in coronary heart disease, working across Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals as well as Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

She is an expert in performing coronary procedures including: diagnostic angiography, coronary angioplasty (including complex cases), intravascular coronary imaging, pressure wires, shockwaves therapy and rota ablation.

She is one of the leading specialists in her niche interest of womenand heart disease and focuses on aspects of hormonal changes that can affect cardiovascular risk factors.

Through this interest she also sub-specialises in a rare coronary disease known as spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), which has been one of the main focus of her research. She specialises in fibromuscular dysplasia and HIV patients with heart conditions as well.

Alongside her research work in SCAD, she has set up a renowned specialist NHS clinic and contributes to ongoing UK and European research and registry studies of the condition.

Dr Al-Hussaini has a vast interest and expertise in promoting prevention by early intervention to cardiovascular risk factors and identifying potential non-conventional risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease. She offers heart risk screening consultations to patients to identify risks and initiate early management.

Dr Al-Hussaini completed her medical studies at Imperial College London in 2005. She completed higher training at top London hospitals. She gained prestigious interventional fellowships in London and sub specialised in coronary disease and intervention.

Following completion of her clinical training she undertook research in SCAD and has obtained the renowned ‘rare diseases fellowship’ from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), which enabled her to do PhD themed research.

Dr Al-Hussaini as a senior consultant pursued further education and was awarded the renowned ECS scholarship for an executive MSC in Health economics, Policy and strategy at the London School of Economics.

She has used this platform to focus on building health care systems in low income countries and has worked with many health ministries on health care reformation.

Dr Abtehale Al-Hussaini has vast clinical and research expertise in women with cardiovascular disease. Her main academic interest is focused on spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and aortopathy.

She is one of the UK’s only experts within this field, with an extensive background in leading the UK SCAD registry and the phenotyping study and continues to contribute to the pan European registry.

She also works alongside international partners and collaborators to further research, understand the pathophysiology, and best manage this condition. She has recently led and contributed to significant papers and position paper which have formulated guidelines in SCAD.

She continues her research theme in HIV and cardiovascular disease and understanding the pathophysiology. She has published several papers and led on several lectures within this arena.

Her other passion is working on health care reforms in low and middle income countries and producing outcome data that helps improve and shape better health care through policy.

Alongside academia, Dr Al-Hussaini has an extensive background in teaching and training. She has lectured extensively at national and international levels and universities and trains and teaches postgraduate students in the UK and globally.

She supervises research students, and contributes to organising annual cardiovascular update courses.

She has been working with, and representing, the Royal College of Physicians in training and teaching. She has extensive teaching experience across the EMEA and West Africa.
