A Cardiac MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive scan to capture detailed three-dimensional images of the heart and blood vessels to help diagnose cardiomyopathy, Valvular Heart Disease, and other cardiac abnormalities with exceptional accuracy.

What Is a Cardiac MRI Scan?
A Heart MRI Test or Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) uses magnetic and radio waves to take high-resolution images of the heart chambers, valves, and muscles. Unlike a cardiac CT, an MRI heart provides detailed insights into the heart’s anatomy without using X-rays.
Detailed Insights Into a Cardiac MRI Procedure
During an MRI scan of the heart, you lie flat on a bed that slides into a tunnel-shaped scanner, opened at both sides. The CRM scan typically takes 45–60 minutes during which you need to keep still, and briefly hold your breath at a few points, while the machine captures heart images. A small device may be placed on your chest or abdomen to improve image quality.
Your blood pressure may also be monitored during the scan if required. In some cases, contrast dye is injected through an IV line in the arm to enhance clarity, after which you are advised to drink plenty of fluids to flush it out.
MRI Procedure In Children
Babies and young children may need anaesthesia to keep them still during a cardiac MRI. If your child requires this scan, your doctor will explain the process and address any concerns.
Types of Cardiac MRI Scans
Cardiac Viability MRI
A Cardiac Viability MRI (Perfusion and Delay) uses contrast to highlight areas receiving sufficient blood supply and detect any scarring in heart muscles. It helps radiologists identify which areas are still viable and which are permanently damaged.
Stress Perfusion MRI
A Stress Perfusion Cardiac MRI uses adenosine and contrast to compare the heart’s blood flow at rest and under stress. It helps identify areas not receiving enough blood supply during stress, and the resting phase is analysed afterwards without adenosine. The images of both phases are then compared to check for any functional abnormalities.
Structural Assessment MRI
A structural assessment MRI scan provides a detailed overview of the heart’s anatomy, chambers, valves, and major vessels. It is often performed to detect congenital heart conditions or tumours, providing clear visualisation of any structural defects.
RV and LV Function MRI
An RV and LV Function MRI evaluates how the heart’s lower chambers (Right and Left Ventricles) pump blood through the lungs and body. Using the MRI scanner, the heart’s pumping efficiency is assessed to reveal any heart problems.
MRI Angiogram
An MRI angiogram evaluates the main artery (aorta) and its branches supplying blood to the head and arms (Great Vessels). It visualises the vessel size and detects narrowing in the major blood vessels to reveal abnormal blood flow through the aorta.
Who Needs a Private Cardiac MRI?
MRI of the heart is performed for detecting a range of common and rare heart conditions that other tests may ignore, including:
Cardiomyopathy
People experiencing breathlessness, chest discomfort, swelling, or persistent fatigue may need a private cardiac MRI to check any weakened/thickened heart muscles or myocardial scarring, causing structural and functional abnormalities in the heart.
Congenital Heart Disease
People experiencing shortness of breath, poor exercise tolerance, or heart murmurs may have an underlying structural cardiac defect. MRI helps detect these abnormalities and provides comprehensive insights without using X-rays.
Arrhythmia
Anyone experiencing palpitations, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, or fainting may require a private cardiac MRI to investigate hidden structural issues that are worsening their arrhythmic condition.
Aortic Heart Disease
Individuals with chest or back pain, uncontrolled high BP, a family history of aortic aneurysms, or suspected aortic enlargement may need a private cardiac MRI for detailed assessment of the aorta.
Pericardial Abnormalities
Persistent chest pain, breathlessness, or swelling may indicate pericardial inflammation or fluid buildup. MRI clearly shows pericardial thickening, fluid buildup, or constriction, which badly affects overall heart health.
