Portable Device | Accurate & Reliable Diagnosis

A 24 Hour Blood Pressure Monitor, also known as an Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor (ABPM), is a reliable device to track blood pressure over 24 hours. It provides a detailed view of the patterns and fluctuations of BP that might be missed during a standard check-up.

What is a 24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitor?

A 24hr BP monitor is a wearable digital device that records your whole-day blood pressure patterns during routine activities and sleep. It helps your cardiologist determine whether you have true hypertension or it’s a white-coat effect caused by anxiety during clinic visits.

How Does an Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor Work?

Ambulatory BP monitoring is more accurate and reliable than single clinic readings. It involves wearing a small cuff and portable monitor on your upper arm for 24 hours, automatically recording your blood pressure at regular intervals during daily activities and sleep. After the monitoring period, our clinical team reviews the data to assess your blood pressure patterns and recommend appropriate treatment.

Types of 24h Ambulatory BP Monitors

Standard ABPM

These are the most commonly used blood pressure monitors, which record your BP fluctuations after regular intervals throughout the day.

Smart ABPM

These are modern blood pressure monitoring devices that sync with mobile apps and display BP readings in real-time.

Oscillometric ABPM

This type of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring measures BP by detecting oscillations in the arterial wall as the cuff inflates and deflates throughout daily activities.

Auscultatory ABPM Monitors

These monitors measure blood pressure by detecting Korotkoff sounds using an acoustic transducer.

Why is an Ambulatory BP Monitor Needed?

A 24h blood pressure monitoring test is needed to identify the accurate cause of long-term high blood pressure that may also indicate some underlying cardiac conditions, including:

Uncontrolled Hypertension

ABPM can reveal whether your blood pressure is normal or remains elevated despite treatment or lifestyle changes. By showing hidden spikes, it helps prevent serious cardiac complications such as stroke, kidney damage, or heart attack.

White-Coat or Masked Hypertension

An Ambulatory blood pressure monitor test is ideal for people whose clinic readings don’t match their symptoms or actual blood pressure, helping detect white-coat hypertension (BP rise in medical settings) and masked hypertension (elevated BP at home).

Nocturnal Hypertension

Blood pressure in some people rises during sleep, but they don’t experience any symptoms. ABPM takes BP readings overnight to identify abnormal nocturnal patterns, including non-dipping (10-20% lower BP during sleep) or reverse-dipping (higher nighttime BP).

Prevent Complications

People with a family history of cardiovascular diseases or diabetes have a higher risk of hypertension and future cardiac complications. ABPM provides a 24-hour BP record to detect fluctuations that can cause stroke, heart attack, or even organ damage.

Determine the Effectiveness of Medicines

An ambulatory BP monitoring device can also be worn to assess how well your prescribed medication controls your blood pressure over 24 hours. It allows doctors to adjust the dose or medicine accordingly.

Faqs

Sleeping with an ambulatory BP monitor doesn’t require many precautions. Lie down straight and keep the cuff in the correct position. You can remove the belt holding the monitor for more comfortable sleep, but the cuff on your upper arm must remain intact.

Driving with a BP monitor is allowed – just keep the monitor in the proper position, and ensure it does not restrict your body movement while driving.

The ABPM automatically records your blood pressure readings at regular intervals, and you don’t need to do manual measurements.

Blood pressure can vary a bit or give a false reading due to intense exercise, stress, and caffeine intake. Therefore, you should avoid such factors to get accurate BP data throughout the monitoring period.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitors are generally safe. However, some individuals may experience temporary discomfort or mild skin irritation from the cuff.

The device must be kept dry, so showering or bathing should be avoided while wearing the monitor.

Private 24-hour BP monitoring in London usually costs between £200 and £400, depending on the clinic and reporting facility.
