Duration: 15-20 Minutes

£390

A Carotid Doppler, also known as a Carotid Duplex or Carotid Artery Ultrasound Scan, is a non-invasive diagnostic test to evaluate the blood flow through carotid arteries. It helps detect blockage in the blood flow from the heart to the brain to assess the risk of stroke or other vascular conditions.

What is a Carotid Doppler Scan?

Carotid arteries are the 2 main blood vessels in the neck responsible for supplying blood to the brain. Carotid Doppler is a specialist scan that uses high-resolution ultrasound and Doppler imaging to assess the blood flow through the carotid arteries and detect stenosis, plaque, and stroke risk. Based on the results of this scan, cardiologists decide if the issue can be managed by medicine and lifestyle adjustments or if a surgical intervention is required.

Your Private Carotid Doppler: What to Expect?

Before Your Carotid Scan: Preparations for the Test

No special preparations are required for a Carotid artery ultrasound. Just wear a comfortable dress with a top having a low or open neckline to allow easy access to the neck. Don’t wear jewellery, especially necklaces. Fasting or skipping medicine is usually not required for a Carotid Ultrasound unless your doctor advises otherwise. Make sure to inform your ultrasonographer about your ongoing medication, if any.

During Your Carotid Scan: The Procedure

You will lie flat on an examination bed, with your head slightly tilted opposite to the side of the neck where the scan is being performed. A sonographer conducts a carotid artery Doppler using a small, handheld device called a transducer. A small amount of gel is applied to the ultrasound probe and gently moved across the neck with a little bit of pressure. The probe uses high-frequency sound waves to capture images of the carotid arteries from different angles to detect any blood flow abnormalities. The scan helps evaluate blood flow through the carotid arteries to identify any narrowing or blockage. The test takes around 15-20 minutes and causes no side effects.

After Your Scan

Usually, there are no precautions required after your scan. You can safely drive and go home immediately following your scan. However, if you feel any unusual symptoms, please inform your cardiology team.

Results of Your Private Carotid Ultrasound

Once your carotid ultrasound is done, you will receive your report on the same day as your appointment. Your cardiologist will review the report and share findings with you, considering your symptoms, medical history, and overall heart health. You may be recommended for further tests and treatment, where required.

How Much is a Private Carotid Doppler Scan?

The Carotid Artery Ultrasound Scan at The National Heart Clinic, London costs £390, which includes a consultation with your cardiologist and a detailed discussion of results usually provided the same day.

Why is a Carotid Doppler Test Done?

A private carotid Doppler scan may be recommended for individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes, or raised cholesterol, as well as those who have recently experienced a transient ischemic attack (mini stroke). You may need a Carotid scan to evaluate the following conditions.

Plaque Detection

A carotid ultrasound can identify plaques – fat, cholesterol, or calcium deposits that build up within the carotid arteries and can restrict blood flow to the brain, increasing the risk of stroke.

Checking Arterial Narrowing (Stenosis)

The scan accurately measures the severity of narrowing in the carotid arteries, helping clinicians assess stroke risk.

Detection of Blood Clots (Thrombosis)

Carotid USG can visualise blood clots within the arteries, which may obstruct blood flow and require urgent medical attention.

Evaluation of Blood Flow

Using Doppler technology, the test evaluates blood flow speed and direction to identify abnormal flow patterns, turbulence, or restricted circulation.

A Carotid Doppler (USG) does not usually cause dizziness, as the scan is safe and non-invasive. If dizziness occurs, it is more likely related to an underlying cardiovascular condition rather than the procedure itself.

The carotid dopplers generally take around 20-30 minutes for most people, though it can vary a bit.

Chest pain, dizziness, blurred vision, and fatigue can be the common signs of blocked carotid arteries. However, experiencing these symptoms doesn’t always indicate an arterial blockage, as they may also be linked to other cardiovascular conditions.

GP referral is usually not required for your carotid scan. You can book your test here or call us with any queries.

A carotid bruit is an abnormal sound heard through a stethoscope over the carotid artery. It is usually caused by a turbulent blood flow that may be an indication of carotid artery stenosis.

Carotid Doppler is a non-invasive test that does not use radiation and provides real-time insights into blood flow through the carotid arteries. A cardiac MRI and CT angiography are often performed to see anatomical details and plan surgical procedures if required.
