What Is a Stress Echocardiogram?
An Exercise Echo, also known as a Stress Echo, is a cardiac ultrasound that evaluates how effectively your heart functions under strain. The test assesses your heart health by measuring its pumping efficiency and identifying whether exercise triggers any signs of a heart condition.
How Is Stress Echocardiography Performed?
During an Exercise Echo, small electrodes will be placed on your chest to monitor your heart’s rhythm. Your doctor will check your vitals and perform an initial echo to get images of your heart at rest. Then, you’ll be asked to start exercising (treadmill or an exercise bike), and increase its intensity gradually until you reach your target heart rate.
Your heart’s electrical activity and performance will be continuously monitored. Once exercise is complete, a second echo scan will be done to compare your heart’s function before and after exertion to identify any signs of cardiac abnormalities.
Types of Heart Stress Tests
Exercise ECG
A Stress ECG evaluates your heart’s activity during physical exertion to detect a heart condition, such as CAD, Arrhythmias, or any symptoms triggered by exercise. Also, it helps determine safe exercise levels and decide a treatment plan after a cardiac event.
Stress Test with Echocardiography
A Stress Echocardiogram combines exercise-induced stress with advanced imaging to evaluate how well your heart pumps blood under exertion. It helps detect various cardiac conditions, such as arterial blockages, CAD, valvular heart disease, and exercise-associated problems, providing detailed insight into the heart’s function.
Nuclear Stress Test
A Nuclear Stress Test uses a small dose of radioactive dye and detailed imaging to assess cardiac blood flow at rest and during exercise. Combined with an EKG, it identifies areas with reduced circulation, evaluates heart disease severity, and detects tissue damage caused by a heart attack.
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET)
A cardiopulmonary Echo or CPET evaluates how your heart and lungs work together to provide oxygen-rich blood to your body during exercise. It also determines whether your muscles are getting enough oxygen during exertion to assess your cardiovascular fitness and detect any heart and lung conditions.
Pharmacological Stress Test
A Pharmacologic Stress Test evaluates your heart health using medication. These medicines stimulate the heart to beat harder and faster, helping determine safe levels of exercise for individuals with a heart condition or recovering from a cardiac event.
Who Needs Stress Echo Testing?
An exercise echocardiogram detects heart problems that appear or worsen only during physical exertion. Your consultant may recommend this test if you’re experiencing signs of a cardiac condition or have a family history of heart disease.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
This test evaluates blood flow to the heart muscle, helping detect blockages or narrowing of the coronary arteries that cause chest pain or increased risk of heart attack.
Heart Valve Disease
Echocardiography with a stress test can assess how well the heart valves function under exertion, identifying valve leakage or reduced blood flow.
Post-Heart Attack or Surgery
A cardiologist may recommend this test to determine safe exercise levels and monitor recovery in patients following a heart attack or cardiac surgery.
Arrhythmias
Stress Echo scanning monitors the abnormal heart rhythm that occurs during exercise but is normal at rest, providing valuable insight into treatment requirements.
Unusual Heart Symptoms During Exercise
An Echo Stress Test is recommended for individuals experiencing dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath during exertion to identify potential cardiac issues.
