Dr Alessandro Giardini is an award-winning and leading senior consultant in paediatric cardiology looking after children and adolescents with congenital heart disease. Dr. Giardini specialises in echocardiography and complex congenital cardiac defects. Dr. Giardini is the Director of Cardiology inpatient services based at the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London. An expert in congenital heart disease, Dr Giardini also provides outpatient consultations for all manner of heart problems in children, including palpitations, heart murmurs, chest pain, and heart valve issues. Dr. Giardini is considered as a leading opinion leader in the UK, Europe and the USA and he is frequently contactred by families and overseas doctors to provide expert second opinions on complex cardiac problems. Dr Giardini practices privately across several London locations.
Dr Giardini’s experience in congenital heart disease extends to the diagnosis and management of a wide range of defects in babies, children and adolescents. His GOSH unit has pioneered techniques including transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement. Dr. Giardini has undertaken extensive, cutting edge reasearch in the field of paediatric cardiology and congenital heart disease and has received more than 100 million USD in reasearch funding over the years. Dr Giardini’s deep involvement in paediatric cardiac research means his patients are treated according to the latest, evidence based and most successful techniques.
Dr Giardini, who is a Top Doctors 2021 award winner, also leads specialist clinics for children with paediatric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Dr Giardini has a medical degree and a PhD (in the pathology of heart failure in patients with congenital heart defects) from the University of Bologna’s (Italy) School of Medicine. Dr Giardini went on to undergo extensive training in paediatric cardiology both in Bologna and at the University of California, San Francisco, USA under the leadership of Prof. Perloff, Silverman and Teitel. He is actively involved in research, having published over 170 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Science and Nature.
