INTRODUCTION
Dr. Basel El Hanbali is a highly experienced Consultant Interventional Cardiologist with over 20 years of NHS consultant experience and an international medical career spanning the UK, France, and the Middle East. As Clinical Director of Medical Specialties at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of Physicians, Dr. El Hanbali combines exceptional clinical expertise with outstanding leadership in healthcare management.
His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of interventional cardiology, with particular expertise in complex coronary interventions, primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction, and advanced catheter-based procedures. Dr. El Hanbali has performed over 15,000 cardiac catheterizations and 3,000 percutaneous coronary interventions (PTCA) as a sole operator, demonstrating his extensive procedural experience and technical proficiency.
As Clinical Director, Dr. El Hanbali oversees multiple medical specialties including Cardiology, Endocrinology, Respiratory Medicine, Oncology, Haematology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation, Neurology, and Stroke Medicine. He is responsible for strategic planning, budget allocation, clinical governance, and the professional development of over 40 consultant physicians. His leadership role extends to the senior medical leadership team and clinical executive group at the hospital.
Dr. El Hanbali serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds and maintains an active role in medical education, supervising Foundation Year doctors and training Specialist Registrars in interventional cardiology techniques. He is committed to advancing cardiac care through research and has been Principal Investigator for major national studies including EMMACE-2, EMMACE-3, SPACE ROCKET, and SCENARY.
A member of the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society (BCIS) and an active participant in international cardiology forums, Dr. El Hanbali has presented live cases at prestigious meetings including the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference in Washington, where he demonstrated the pioneering “Jerusalem technique” for bifurcation lesion management alongside Dr. Antonio Colombo of Milan.
