DR. GIOVANNI LUIGI DE MARIA

INTRODUCTION

Dr Giovanni Luigi De Maria is a leading Consultant Interventional Cardiologist based in Oxford, with an international reputation for excellence in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease. He specialises in minimally invasive coronary interventions, resistant high blood pressure (hypertension), and advanced therapies for chest pain (angina), offering his patients access to cutting-edge treatments that are not widely available elsewhere.

After graduating in Medicine in Rome in 2008, Dr De Maria trained at world-renowned centres in Italy and the UK, completing an advanced fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where he now works as a Consultant. He also holds a PhD in ”Clinical, Cellular and Molecular Research” and has been recognised with numerous awards for his scientific contributions.

Dr De Maria performs the full spectrum of coronary interventions – including angioplasty and stenting – with optimisation and guidance offered by the implementation of the latest coronary physiology tests and intravascular imaging techniques (such as OCT and IVUS). He also has particular expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up of patients with refractory angina and microvascular angina, ensuring highly personalised care for complex and challenging cases.

He leads pioneering programmes in Oxford, including Renal Denervation for resistant hypertension and the Coronary Sinus Reducer programme for patients with severe angina who cannot undergo standard procedures.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr De Maria is actively involved in research and education. Dr De Maria has served and continue to serve as Chief Investigator for both national and international clinical trials, placing him at the forefront of innovation and ensuring his patients benefit from the very latest advances in cardiology. He has authored more than 170 scientific publications, and is Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford. He regularly lectures internationally and is actively involved in teaching to Cardiology trainees and supervises DPhil and DM students at University of Oxford.

Known for his compassionate approach, Dr De Maria takes time to understand each patient’s needs and concerns, combining advanced medical skill with a clear, reassuring manner.
