DR. INDER BIRDI
Dr Inder Birdi is a leading UK cardiothoracic surgeon with an international reputation for excellence in patient care, surgical innovation, and minimally invasive heart surgery. With over two decades of experience treating complex cardiac conditions, he is regarded as one of the few specialists in the country with advanced expertise in keyhole heart surgery, a less invasive alternative to traditional open-heart procedures. This approach has significantly improved recovery times and outcomes for patients undergoing surgeries such as aortic valve replacement and coronary bypass.
He studied medicine at the University of Nottingham, graduating with honours, before completing his surgical training at some of the UK’s most renowned institutions, including the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge and the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. From early in his career, Mr Birdi focused on refining techniques to reduce patient trauma and promote quicker recoveries, an ethos that continues to guide his practice today.
In 2006, Mr Birdi was appointed as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, where he played a key role in establishing a pioneering programme in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Through this work, he helped introduce techniques that are now routinely used to treat conditions such as aortic valve disease, atrial fibrillation, and coronary artery disease through small incisions between the ribs, avoiding the need to open the breastbone.
To further his vision for patient-centred care, Mr Birdi founded The Keyhole Heart Clinic, a specialist centre that offers early diagnosis, expert second opinions, and advanced surgical treatment using the latest minimally invasive methods. The clinic attracts patients from across the UK and abroad who are seeking safer, less invasive alternatives to traditional heart surgery.
