Dr Emmanuel Ako is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals. Dr Emmanuel Ako studied medicine at University College London, where he graduated in 2005 with a distinction. He completed an intercalated BSc in Physiology, supported by 1st class honours from the Physiology Society and went onto his postgraduate medical training at St Georges Hospital, The London Chest Hospital and The Heart Hospital. He achieved his MRCP before dual accrediting in general internal medicine and cardiology in North East Thames. He trained in interventional cardiology at the Heart Hospital and Barts Heart Centre and gained complimentary training in cardiac MRI and Cardiac at Great Ormond Street and Barts Heart Centre. Throughout his career he has been awarded numerous prizes showcasing his knowledge, innovation and expertise in interventional cardiology and research into haemoglobinopathy.

Dr Emmanuel Ako has an active involvement in stem cell research for ischaemic heart disease and the effects on the cardiovascular system for patients with thalassemia and sickle cell disease.

Dr Emmanuel Ako has an active involvement in stem cell research for ischaemic heart disease and the effects on the cardiovascular system for patients with thalassemia and sickle cell disease.

Dr Emmanuel Ako has worked on simulation-based training in cardiology and has been involved in developing a very successful simulation-based training programme with Imperial College London.  This has now been rolled out across the UK aimed at cardiologists and anaesthetists. He is a frequent speaker in public engagement workshops internationally.

Dr Emmanuel Ako has expertise in general medicine and cardiology with subspecialty expertise in coronary intervention.  He specialises in assessing patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, hypertension, valvular heart disease, dizziness, faints, and ankle swelling. He performs coronary angiography, coronary physiology measurements and coronary angioplasty also known as stenting.

He is an expert in the management of coronary artery disease including microvascular angina and acute myocardial infarction (heart attacks) and cardiovascular complications in haemoglobinopathies such as Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Disease which are inherited blood disorders.
