ABOUT Dr. Alexander Liu

Dr Alexander Liu is a consultant cardiologist in inflammatory heart conditions (pericarditis, myocarditis), cardiac sarcoidosis, cardio-oncology (heart diseases in cancer patients), and all aspects of general cardiology (hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and arrhythmias).

General cardiology expertise

Dr Liu is highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with all cardiac symptoms including chest discomfort, breathlessness, palpitations and dizziness/blackouts. His expertise ranges from general heart health checks to management of complex heart conditions.

Cardiac sarcoidosis and inflammatory heart conditions

Dr Liu is the cardiac sarcoidosis lead at the tertiary referral centre in Brighton, who is experienced in all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. He is also a tertiary referral specialist for patients with myocarditis and pericarditis.

Cardio-oncology

Dr Liu specialises in the assessment and treatment of cardiac conditions in cancer patients. He advises on the regional cardio-oncology multidisciplinary team Panel in Brighton, where the management of heart health in patients with cancer are discussed each week.

Advanced cardiac imaging

Dr Liu also specialises in cardiac MRI and coronary CT with over 15 years of experience combined. He runs regular lists in both modalities having obtained international accreditations. He is an expert in the use of non-invasive imaging to optimise the cardiac care for his patients.

Academic achievements

Dr Liu is an honorary assistant professor at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, leading research in cardiac imaging and inflammatory heart disease. He has authored over 50 publications in medical journals, contributed a clinical textbook chapter, and regularly acts as an invited reviewer and editor for medical journals.

Dr Liu graduated from Imperial College London School of Medicine with distinction in medical sciences and achieved first-class honours in an intercalated BSc in cardiovascular sciences. He completed his specialist cardiology training at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and was awarded a research MD by the University of St Andrews.

Dr Liu is committed to delivering patient-centred care. He places a strong emphasis on helping patients understand their conditions clearly, whilst working with his patients in partnership to formulate individualised treatment plans.
