ABOUT Dr. Thomas Alway

Dr Alway combines specialist expertise in inherited cardiac conditions, heart failure and advanced cardiac rhythm management, allowing him to provide comprehensive care throughout every stage of a patient’s journey. His practice is centred on providing seamless continuity of care as patients’ needs evolve over time, from establishing a diagnosis and assessing inherited risk within families through to long-term management and advanced therapies where required. He also provides comprehensive general cardiology assessment for patients with symptoms including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations and blackouts.

Dr. Thomas Alway CREDENTIALS

Dr Alway takes a thoughtful, patient-centred approach. He takes time to listen carefully, explain complex conditions in clear language and involve patients in decisions about their care. He recognises that living with a heart condition affects more than physical health and, particularly in inherited cardiac conditions, understands the importance of supporting whole families as well as individual patients.

Dr Alway has specialist expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of inherited cardiac conditions including cardiomyopathy and inherited arrhythmia. He works closely with patients and their families to develop personalised treatment plans for both patients and at-risk family members where appropriate. He also provides diagnostic genetic testing and comprehensive family screening for relatives at risk of inherited heart disease.

Dr Alway has specialist expertise in diagnosing and managing all forms of heart failure, from newly diagnosed disease to advanced heart failure requiring complex therapies. He holds Heart Failure Association accreditation from the European Society of Cardiology.

As patients’ conditions evolve, he provides advanced cardiac device therapies including pacemakers, ICDs, CRT devices, S-ICDs and contemporary conduction system pacing techniques. His expertise in inherited cardiac conditions and heart failure allows him to identify patients most likely to benefit from device therapy and provide seamless care before, during and after implantation.

Dr Alway provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for all aspects of general cardiology, including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, blackouts, hypertension, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular risk assessment. He uses a combination of clinical assessment and appropriate investigations to provide accurate diagnosis and evidence-based treatment tailored to each patient.

Dr Alway is Lead for Inherited Cardiac Conditions, Educational Lead for Cardiology at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and he leads the Sussex Cardiomyopathy UK Support Group, supporting patients and families living with inherited heart muscle disease. He has published in peer-reviewed cardiology journals and remains actively involved in research.
